Zimbabwe girl tipped as favorite to win UK X-Factor 2010

Zimbabwean singer Gamu Nhengu‘s version of “Walking On Sunshine,” originally recorded by Katrina and the Waves in 1983 an instant hit with the shows UK viewers

Zimbabwean born, and now Scotland based 18 year old Gamuchirai Nhengu has become an instant TV sensation after 12 million people watched her waltz through an audition for the hit ITV talent search show, UK X-Factor, at the weekend.

Known to her friends by the shortened version of her name "Gamu", she has already been tipped as favorite to win the competition, with UK's leading bookmaker William Hill making her a 10/1 favourite to go all the way and win this year’s contest.

The Zimbabwean gave a unique rendition of Katrina and the Waves’ 1983 hit, Walking on Sunshine, and had the Glasgow audience literally eating out of her hand.

Zimfest UK secures Econet Wireless UK sponsorship

Zimfest UK has secured sponsorship from Econet Wireless Group, a company that has become the first foreign operator to enter the United Kingdom communication market.

Zimfest is the biggest Southern African Festival by the Zimbabwean community held in the UK, London annually that has set itself apart in the past nine years as one of the best run events on the UK calendar and has enjoyed a period of stability and growth which has seen it attract wider audiences.

The package will see Econet Wireless UK granted exclusivity as telecoms partner to the festival and will open up a number of cross selling opportunities for the two organisations.

The crooner, 37, has said that talk of an official campaign is still premature, but the country’s locals had “drafted” him into politics.

“I can’t sing forever,” Us Magazine quoted Jean as telling CNN.

This Friday evening (30 July) is the Gala Opening of The Playhouse Company’s 14th SA Women’s Arts Festival, with the first performance in Durban of the internationally celebrated musical, African Mamas.

For the opening night only (which will honour the memory of the late Busi Mhlongo), three of SA’s most famous stage and recording stars, Abigail Kubeka; Dorothy Masuka; and Thandi Klaasen, will be making prestige guest appearances with the cast.
